What to expect from the Los Llanos area?

  1. This vast sea of golden grasslands, crisscrossed by winding rivers and dotted with towering palms, harbors one of South America's most extraordinary ecosystems. The Orinoco plains burst with life—from capybaras bathing in oxbow lakes to anacondas slithering through wetlands, while scarlet macaws streak across endless skies.

  2. The llanos are the domain of Colombia’s legendary llaneros (cowboys), whose cattle-ranching traditions and joropo music pulse through the region. Stay at working haciendas like Hato San Pablo or eco-lodges such as Savanna Orinoquia, where days begin with horseback rides alongside wild deer and nights fade to firefly-lit storytelling.

  3. While popular parks like El Tuparro draw visitors, few explore the private reserves where jaguars still roam and pink river dolphins surface at dusk. The rivers here—wide, warm, and teeming with piranhas—invite adventurous swims, not lazy beach days.

Day 1: Arrival & Wild Welcome

  • Morning: Fly from Bogotá to Yopal (1hr). 4x4 transfer to Savanna Orinoquia Lodge (2-3hrs) through golden grasslands.

  • Afternoon: Sunset safari spotting capybaras, deer, and birds (herons, hawks).

  • Evening: Traditional llanero BBQ (grilled beef, yuca, chili) under starry skies.

Day 2: River Safari & Cowboy Culture

  • Dawn: Boat tour on the Meta River—pink dolphins, caimans, and anacondas!

  • Morning: Visit Hato San Pablo cattle ranch: milk cows, horseback ride with buffalo.

  • Afternoon: Lodge pool time + joropo music lesson (harp, maracas).

  • Night: Campfire with llanero storytelling.

Day 3: Jaguar Country Expedition

  • Full Day: Deep savanna safari in Matarredonda Reserve (or similar) tracking jaguars, giant anteaters, and armadillos. Picnic lunch in the wild.

  • Afternoon: Swim in natural pools with cowboys.

  • Farewell Dinner: Grilled meats + traditional dance show.

Day 4: Flight of the Macaws

  • Sunrise: Birdwatching (macaws, toucans).

  • Midday: Return to Yopal for flight to Bogotá.

Los Llanos FAQ

  • Tayrona is a year round destination. Driest season is December to April. Some rains can be expected the rest of the year but nothing that refrains to enjoy the region.

  • From Bogotá, Medellin and the rest of the country:

    • Nearest airport is Santa Marta (SMR) approximately 1h away.

    • It has direct flights from Bogotá, Medellín, Bucaramanga and Panamá city with both Avianca and Latam airlines.

    From Cartagena, there are no direct flights since both destinations are in the same area.

    • A land transfer takes approximately 4h30 depending on where you are staying.

    • Private charter planes between Cartagena and Santa Marta are available at a reasonable price.

    • Helicopter transfers combined with a beach pic-nic and mountain expedition are also available.

  • Yes, the area surrounding the Tayrona National Park is safe to travel.

  • Definitely!

    The mix between soft adventure, jungle ambiance, warm weather, resorts with swimming pools and friendly locals, make Tayrona a very family-friendly destination.
